WaNoWa
Upon our recent visit with the CCP team in Tokyo, we were able to find connection over many shared interests, one of which is a deep appreciation for music. As a parting gift, the team gave us a copy of this singularly beautiful record, titled “WaNoWa”.
Re-released around this time last year via CROSSPOINT and Chee Shimizu’s 17853 reissue imprint, “WaNoWa” features four recordings of a 12 member ensemble belonging to a support facility for persons with disabilities in Yamazoe Village, Nara Prefecture. Performed on single-note “choir chime” instruments with guidance from percussionist Yohei Yamaura, the collection of pieces serves as a tribute to the victims of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Upon listening, each note played resounds delicately from one to the next, with the space in between each lingering note providing restful pause. A gentle stream of water and other sounds of nature provide calming backdrops to the ensemble’s performance.
